Dining Room Glow-Up: From Neutral to Bold & Beautiful

The dining room is so much more than a place to eat. It’s where school days get rehashed over dinner, jokes are told, homework gets tackled, and puzzles find their missing pieces. It’s also the space where community happens — family, friends, and neighbors gathered around the table. For me, it’s always been the room where I imagine hosting, entertaining, and creating memories.

And because it holds so much life, this room has worn many different “faces” over the years. But this newest version? It’s the one I’m most excited about — the one that finally feels like me.

The “Move-In” Before

When we first tackled this room, it just felt… stale. The dark tan walls, outdated lighting, and heavy décor made the whole space feel darker than I wanted. I knew right away that it needed fresh energy — something brighter and more inviting.

I wasn’t ready to go bold just yet, though. So instead of sticking with the stark white we used in other parts of the house, I chose a lighter paint color to give the dining room its own identity while still playing it safe. It was definitely a step up from where we started, but looking back, it was more about dipping my toe in than fully diving into my style.

My First Redecoration

In my first round of decorating this room, my decisions were very much shaped by the season of life we were in. With little kids running around, I knew nothing in this space would last forever — and I couldn’t get too attached to any piece for fear of it being destroyed. I was also thinking more about “resale value” than about how to make this room truly feel like me. Because of that, I hesitated to make choices that felt too permanent.

Our dining chairs, for example, had to withstand food stains, sticky fingers, and even being used as step stools. At the time, practicality came first. What I didn’t realize, though, was just how much life would spill over into this space. The dining room became the hub for homework, coloring projects, and endless crafts — and suddenly, the textured table that looked great in theory was working against us.

Looking back, that version of the room was less about creating a space that inspired me and more about simply surviving the moment.

Stepping Into Our Bold Style

This time around, I wanted more than just a functional dining room — I wanted cozy. A space that actually felt like what I’d always imagined: friends gathered around the table, cards and board games spread out, fancy drinks in hand, laughter filling the air while our kids played nearby.

I also wanted the room to feel grown-up — a little more mature, but still full of personality. Living abroad as expats had stretched my sense of style, and now I craved something bolder, richer, and more expressive. Designing this room feels like reestablishing ourselves, making this house feel truly permanent.

So I am leaning in: black artists on the walls, bold prints, and even a velvet couch (though my kids still aren’t quite old enough to lounge on it while eating!). I’m adding a bar cart because, for the first time, “kid proof” wasn’t the top requirement. I can finally design without fear — knowing that while spills may still happen, destruction is no longer inevitable. This room could finally reflect us.

This accent wall is going to make ALL the difference in this space. It was tough getting up but really inexpensive.

This IKEA cabinet is so much more impressive than I thought it would be.

Our new dining room is something similar to a light we had in our dining room in Denver and it makes me so happy!
